Matcha Financiers

In my last post I made fun of my 8yr old son not wanting to eat Dukkah Roasted Cauliflower, the recipe of the week for the Cook the Book Fridays group. It was funny when it was him doing it. Not so funny when I caught myself thinking “I can’t! I just can’t eat green cake” while grimacing. Then to make things worse, I think I beat him in the immaturity game when I caught myself, many, many times throughout the week, thinking “I do not like green eggs and ham, I do not like them Sam I am” while thinking of these Matcha Financiers.

I tried to like these, I know Matcha is pretty popular and on point (or at least I think it is, I see it everywhere on Instagram etc.) I wish at times that I actually cared about what is popular. My 15 yr old is awesome at this. If it’s on trend he will wear, drink, eat, whatever is the latest. I worry about the tattoos that will be “in” when he turns 18!

I really did not like the look or taste of these. I tried really hard to like them. I made them with coconut flour and also with hazelnut and almond flour. I put raspberries in some, chocolate in others and even combinations of both. I made tiger cakes out of them (as pictured) and used dark, milk and white chocolate in case it made a difference. My daughter had to stage an intervention and tell me to “let it go, it’s okay if you don’t like them mum!”

I am curious to see what others in the Tuesdays with Dorie group thought about these Matcha Financiers.
I have enjoyed all the recipes from Dorie’s book until now and I am looking forward to making Odile’s Fresh Orange Cake next post!

  1. Oh no! You definitely went the extra mile to try to like them. I have never made anything with matcha before and have no idea what it tastes like, but for the price of the matcha tea, I sincerely hope I do like it.

  2. I was not a fan of these either – not a tea fan in general and green tea is just too grassy for me. Mine were not even bright and pretty like Dorie’s 😦 Good for you going that extra mile to make sure you didn’t like them! Like Gaye ^^^ I am a bit outraged by the price too!

  3. I haven’the been able to source the tea, but I am already thinking I won’t because I have had matcha and it is gross yuck. Like grass. May substitute something else. I applaud your commitment to the effort though… makes me wonder whether everyone on IG is just making them for the sake of making them, rather than making them because matcha is delish.

  4. Sorry to hear these financiers weren’t a hit for you. On the bright side, their texture looks great, and I think your photos are beautiful!

  5. I felt the same when I first saw this recipe, ugh! green cake. I haven’t made them yet, I know the price of the matcha is expensive, and I have never tasted it before. I will research to see if there is a substitute for it. So sorry you didn’t like them.

  6. I’m still looking for Macy’s too, I’m not sure if I will like them but you made beautiful looking ones even if they’re not a hit.

  7. Love to hear of your adventure, even if it was firmly finding out that these were simply not a favorite. And I absolutely applaud your effort – wow did you give these a “college try” in attempting to find the right mix of flavors where they might be a hit. I am a bit trepidatious about this one as a green cake is in the off putting category to me (and I will eat any cake….). I also know that matcha is some type of crazy popular drink but I have never had it. Guess I will be making up for that. Love that pan that produces the sweet little stars on your cakes. Fun –

  8. I had made matcha financiers before: http://flourishen.blogspot.com/2015/05/matcha-financiers-wheatalmond-flour-and.html. The biggest factor, I believe, is the quality of the matcha. And it is a acquired taste. Impressed about your enthusiasm in making something new and different. Love the shape of your little cakes.

  9. I’ve had matcha shortbread before and enjoyed it, so I’m curious if I’d enjoy these, too. I am impressed with how many versions you tried to see if you could like these. They’re beautiful, even if they weren’t your thing.

  10. i’m looking forward to seeing what i think of these. i’m sorry to hear that you didn’t like them, but really sounds like you gave them every chance possible, at least. 🙂

  11. So sorry you didn’t care for them. These weren’t my favourite either but they went over quite well with work colleagues…..an acquired taste, I think.

  12. I loved reading your description, because I am also a little leery of green cakes. After your description I think I might try substituting vanilla for the green tea. Kudos for trying them.

  13. Thanks for the support of my baking mishap this week. You have me intrigued about this recipe. I don’t know if I will like it as I have never had Match tea.

  14. Wow, so impressed with your dedication to perfecting these financiers! Also…I DO NOT LIKE GREEN EGGS AND HAM, I DO NOT LIKE IT, SAM I AM! (Sorry, not sorry.) You went above and beyond trying to find the perfect combo, but I agree with your daughter that it’s ok not to like it. Am rather trepidatious about trying it now myself!

  15. I am impressed by your efforts!! I am worried about making these next. I have been looking and haven’t been able to find the matcha…but from what everyone was commenting about the price and taste, maybe I should see if there is a substitute 🙂
