Gingerbread Cake

It’s Christmas time!
And Gingerbread Baby Cakes are this week’s Tuesdays with Dorie: Baking with Julia recipe.

I didn’t have baby sized cake pans.
Luckily though, the recipe says you can also use it to make a 10 inch sized gingerbread cake.
Umm… I don’t have one of those either…
But I do have two x 6 inch cake pans and they worked perfectly!
So I guess I made… Gingerbread Adolescent Cakes???

The first cake I kept simple, just a dusting of sugar and served with sweetened whipped cream.
The second cake, I drizzled some lemon icing over…

I think the twist of lemon added a whole new dimension of flavour to this cake.

Now, total disclosure…
I’m not a ginger lover, never have been.
However I’ve linked the smell of ginger in baked goods to Christmas.
So baking this cake, kick started the Christmas season for me!
Gingerbread seems to go hand in hand with cold weather and snowmen.
However I live in Australia, so this gingerbread cake was made in sweltering heat with lizards hanging out my bathroom window and the creek alongside our house in full tropical bloom!

So…
Not being a ginger lover, I think I liked what this cake represented more than the cake itself!
However, if you are a ginger lover, try this recipe for yourself!

Your cakes look beautiful! Love the idea of lemon icing. I know what you mean about the weather, too. Even now living in Arizona in the desert southwest of the US, it’s sometimes difficult to wrap my head around the holidays when I’m running my errands in shorts and a t-shirt!

Your cakes really look divine. Beautiful photos!

How pretty! Love the icing idea.
    Adolescent cakes indeed 🙂
We were in the mountains this weekend and it definitely felt like Christmas up there as we traipsed through the snow.

Glad you were a good sport and made the cake–even in the heat. It smelled wonderful but was a little to molasses tasting for my group.

Love the idea of the lemon icing. Yum. I can eat gingerbread any time of year, even in the sweltering heat. Unfortunately, this particular gingerbread wasn’t my fave.

Wow, that iced gingerbread cake looks terrific! And I totally understand what you mean about this cake representing the Christmas season even if the weather doesn’t feel that way. It’s been in the 80’s (F) where I live, so it’s nice to have this seasonal reminder! Lovely job!

Such very pretty and elegant presentations of your Gingerbread Cakes! The lemon icing looks and sounds like a fabulous idea – I am sure that the lemon flavor pairs very well with the spicy Gingerbread Cake!

Your cakes look beautiful; no one would ever guess that they were baked in sweltering heat. The lemon glaze is a great idea.

I thought of lemon glaze but I only had one lemon. Next time. Great pictures!

Your cakes look so festive and beautiful. Perhaps serving them with ice cream would make it more tolerable in the heat. Great post.

Your cakes are so pretty. I like the idea of a glaze. I too was not so fond of the flavor and I actually love ginger. Think it must have been the coffee, cocoa, and really strong molasses flavor.
